The home of the walking safari, Zambia remains one of the most remote safari destinations in the world. More than 30% of Zambia's land has been set aside for wildlife. Among the country's most well known parks are the South Luangwa, Kafue and Lower Zambezi National Park.

This thrilling safari focuses on the South Luangwa, believed by some to be one of the world's greatest wildlife sanctuaries. The Luangwa River winds its way through the park, attracting great concentrations of game and stunning birdlife.

This is the home of the walking safari and it remains one of the best ways to experience Africa - on foot.

Birdwatching is superb. Hundreds of large waterbirds, among them red faced yellow billed storks, move along the water, gather fish in their mouths as they go. The park attracts a wide array of migrant birds including European swallows, bee-eaters and Steppe buzzards that come from as far away as Russia.

From the stunning South Luangwa, you will fly to Livingstone to visit Victoria Falls - a sight so lovely it must have only been gazed upon by Angels, explorer David Livingstone wrote to Queen Victoria. He later named the thundering falls after his Queen.

Escape to the remoteness of Zambia and experience Africa by foot and by vehicle. You have a lot of flexibility with this itinerary - we can modify the itinerary, add Botswana, Zimbabwe and beyond -- and much more.

Day 2  Lusaka-Mfuwe | Meals: LD
This morning, a light aircraft flight takes you to Mfuwe Lodge, at the entrance to South Luangwa National Park. After time to settle in, enjoy a game drive.

Mfuwe Lodge

The open-plan design of Mfuwe's new structures keeps the comfort and relaxation of guests in mind, but also capitalizes on the fact that an African wilderness experience is a blend of colors and textures, sounds, aromas and sights unmatched anywhere else in the world.

The open plan central lodge facility incorporates reception, lounge, dining and bar areas, under a thatch roof supported by palm poles and dominated by two impressive chimneys at opposite ends. This cool and airy central meeting place is the heart of the lodge. It opens onto a broad timber deck that cantilevers dramatically over the main lagoon. From the comfort of the Lodge guests may view some of Africa's majestic wildlife as animals come down to drink. Elephant, hippopotamus, many antelope species and crocodiles are plentiful in this area.

The deck area in front of the lounge accommodates the swimming pool which also overlooks the main lagoon. In between game drives, walks and meals, guests may relax around the pool or in the unique library which is entirely dedicated to nature conservation related issues, African culture, tradition and history. The library also include a video library and has its own timber deck which overlooks the main lagoon. Here people can read or write in peace and soak up the tranquillity of Africa at its best.

Accommodation is provided in 18 open-plan chalets, each with en-suite bathroom. One third of each chalet's perimeter can be opened, to allow the guest to enjoy the views, the sounds, the scents and the mood of the African wilderness. Each chalet has a large private deck overlooking one of the lagoons.

The bathrooms have both bath and shower, with separate toilet. The bathing corner can be completely opened to offer guests an open-air bathing experience.

Each room has a private bar. The thatched roof has been designed to guarantee maximum ventilation, even though all rooms on the lagoon are dramatically sheltered by huge ebony trees.

The lodge also has an open boma for dinners under starlit African skies and earnest talk around the campfire. Activities from the lodge include day and night game drives; lion and leopard are often seen. The lodge offers walking safaris for closer contact with the game and exceptional bird watching

Day 3  Mfuwe | Meals: BLD
The South Luangwa Valley is one of Africa's most extraordinary game viewing spots. Game drives in this area are thrilling as the concentration and variety of game is amazing. Did you know that zebras in this area look a bit different than those found in East Africa? Here, their stripes tend to be a bit closer together.

Day 4  Mfuwe/South Luangwa Valley | Meals: BLD
A drive takes you further south today, into the heart of the South Luangwa Valley for 3 nights at your choice of camp or lodge. Tucked into picturesque settings along a river or nestled under a canopy of huge old mahagony trees, these camps provide the creature comforts while getting you close to nature. Game viewing will be spectacular over the few days.

Zungulila Bushcamp

Zungulila is a charming camp that embodies the essence of old Africa and a bygone era, with breathtaking views onto the Kapamba river and an expansive plain where natural springs attract huge herds of game. Zungulila is eminently peaceful, and you may be tempted to stay forever!

Up to eight guests can enjoy the serenity of Zungulila in four spacious tents. Built under thatch roofs, each shaded tent has its own private bamboo veranda with immense views over an impressive variety of wildlife - from thirsty elephant at the springs and flocks of birds on the river, to prowling lion and large herds of buffalo on the grassy plains. With stylish interiors, en suite bathrooms, hot-and-cold running water, outdoor showers, and spectacular outdoor bathtubs, you can enjoy your creatures and your creature comforts in this classic tented Bushcamp. Two of the tents have twin beds (queen-sized beds), while the other two each have a king bed. Zungulila is open from April to January.

Activities If you long to explore Africa as it used to be, then come to Zungulila. Our expert guides will lead you on foot through some of the park's most untouched wilderness, where large herds of buffalo roam the grassy plains and thirsty elephants come to drink at the springs and along the river. Activities are focused around walking, but we have opened up a number of game drive loops in the area and so to get even further afield, day and night game drives are also on offer. In the evening, after wading through the river, we invite you to join your hosts for sundowners, or sit around the campfire for a drink, before recounting the day's adventures over a starlit supper overlooking the river.
