Mauritius

The island paradise of Mauritius looks almost like a small dot in the large expanse of ocean set between Southern Africa and Australia. At just over 700 square miles, the island is about 11 times the size of Washington, DC. It's population of more than 1 million inhabitants are a fascinating myriad of Indian, African, European and Chinese origin.

Mauritius was discovered by the Portuguese in 1505 and was subsequently settled by the Dutch, French and British before it gained its independence in 1968. A parliamentary democracy, Mauritius boasts one of the highest per capita incomes in Africa.

In addition to its attraction as a relaxing beach getaway, the geography of Mauritius also gives visitors a chance to see some of the most spectacular scenery in the area. Some 13 million years ago the island was the scene of volcanic activity. For more than 6 million years, molten lava bubbled up from the sea until it formed 2 volcanic craters. More craters followed and today the islands magnificently rugged profile stand starkly against the coastal plains of sugarcane. And, thanks to the coral reefs which are found along its 100 mile coastline, Mauritius is home to powerdery white sand beaches fringed with pine-line casuarina trees.

This melting pot of Indians, Creoles, Muslims, French and Chinese greets visitors with friendly warmth and also makes Mauritius a culinary delight. The wonderful blend of these different cooking styles will delight your palate whether you choose to eat in one of the hotels or in a local restaurant.

Whether you are planning your honeymoon, a romantic getaway, an extension to a safari or simply a relaxing escape from the bustle of everyday life, Mauritius is a perfect choice.
